Human Body

With a lively format featuring a colorful, image-rich layout and conversational text, this entry in the True Book: Health and the Human Body series provides an accessible introduction to food allergies. Five chapters, each broken into titled subsections, cover topics that include allergies’ effects on the immune system, deciphering FDA food labels, allergy testing, and treatments. A “Hidden Dangers” spread lists eight common allergens and where they can (sometimes unexpectedly) be found, such as wheat in hot dogs. Another page promotes cross-contamination vigilance, suggesting, for example, that milk-allergenic kids ask whether deli meat slicers are also used for cheese. Kids coming to terms with new allergy diagnoses may not appreciate the photos of dramatic allergic reactions (not to mention the alarming, large-type announcement that “Peanuts are the most common cause of death from food allergies”), but most will nonetheless appreciate the book’s sound emphasis on being informed and aware. Book and Web resources, along with a somewhat scattershot glossary and index, conclude this useful title. Grades 3-5. --Shelle Rosenfeld --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
